Congressman Boehner: By Week’s End, Only Republicans Will Have Addressed Small Business Tax Hikes & Defense Cuts
Aug 1, 2012
At a weekly press conference with Republican leaders today, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) highlighted today’s House vote to stop the small business tax hike that would destroy more than 700,000 jobs. Congressman Boehner also discussed the letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) by Republican leaders today pledging to bring the House back into session in August if Senate Democrats follow the House’s lead and pass solutions to stop the small business tax hike that threatens the economy and prevent defense cuts that threaten national security. Following are Congressman Boehner’s remarks:
“Two years ago, the president said that stopping the tax hike was the right thing to do for our economy. Well, economic growth is worse now, but he’s out campaigning for a tax hike on small businesses that Ernst & Young says will cost 700,000 jobs in our country. The measure that was passed by Senate Democrats last week does nothing to stop the tax hike on small businesses.
“Listen, Americans want us to focus on jobs, not on raising taxes. That’s why the House today will vote to stop the looming tax hike that will affect all Americans including many small businesses.
“This morning we sent a letter to Senator Reid outlining that if the Senate were to vote to stop the looming tax hikes and if…the Senate were to vote to replace the sequester, that we’d be willing to bring the House back in in August to deal with those issues.
“Listen, President Obama said that small business tax hikes threaten our economy. Frankly, the Democrats’ ‘sequester’ threatens our national security.
“By the end of the week, Republicans will be the only ones in this town which will have addressed both of those threats. The only question now is whether Senate Democrats will work with us and follow us to remove these two giant threats that face the American people and, frankly, face our economy.”
