Boehner Statement on Energy & Commerce Committee’s National Energy Tax Legislation

May 18, 2009

Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) today issued the following statement on the Energy & Commerce Committee’s consideration of legislation to establish a national energy tax on middle-class families and small businesses:

“It’s disappointing that Democrats are barreling ahead with a national energy tax on anyone who drives a car, buys anything made in America, or dares to flip on a light switch.  At a time when middle-class families and small businesses are struggling to make ends meet, particularly as gas prices spike heading into the summer driving season, it is unfathomable that some in Washington would force them to cough up even more by paying an unprecedented national energy tax.

“The fact is, we can clean up the environment, lower energy costs, and create jobs all at the same time.  Republicans’ ‘all of the above’ strategy will reduce carbon emissions through more conservation and increased use of renewable fuels and alternatives like nuclear and clean coal technologies.  At the same time, it will create more jobs and bring down prices for the American people by increasing environmentally-safe production of energy right here at home.  If Democrats are serious about protecting American workers and their families and protecting our environment, they’ll abandon their irresponsible plans for a national energy tax and join Republicans in promoting an ‘all of the above’ strategy to create jobs, lower energy costs, and clean up our air and water.”
