Ohio’s 8th Congressional District is one of the largest agricultural districts in the Buckeye State. It boasts more than 5,400 farms growing grains, produce and raising livestock on nearly 1 million acres. Each year, I host Farm Forum to bring together experts from different sectors of the agriculture community for a discussion of ideas impacting this vital industry.
The 2013 Eighth Congressional District Farm Forum took place on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Edison Community College in Piqua.
The keynote speaker this year was Mr. Ed Schafer. Schafer served as the 29th Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under former President George W. Bush from 2008 to 2009. He served as North Dakota’s governor from 1992 to 2000. His top priorities in office were diversifying and expanding North Dakota’s economy, reducing the cost of government, and advancing agriculture. Schafer was elected chair of the Republican Governors Association in 2000, and that same year he co-founded and co-chaired the Governors Biotechnology Partnership to increase public understanding and support for the benefits of agricultural biotechnology. Currently, Schafer serves on public and private corporate boards of directors and holds leadership positions in foundations and trade associations. He is also an active member of many civic and service organizations. Schafer graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, earned a Master of Business Administration at the University of Denver, and has been awarded two honorary doctorate degrees.
