Boehner Strongly Supports Veto of Legislation Forcing Taxpayers to Pay for Destruction of Human Embryos

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) today released the following statement strongly supporting President Bushs veto of legislation (S.5) that forces taxpayers to pay for the destruction of human life. Boehner also praised the President for signing an executive order to support more promising stem cell research that does not require harming or destroying living embryos:

The Presidents veto today is justified for both moral and scientific reasons and it will be sustained by House Republicans. It is wrong to force taxpayers to foot the bill for research that destroys human embryos and has consistently failed to produce results, particularly at a time when were seeing incredible advances on adult stem cell research that does not require living human embryos to be destroyed or damaged. Whether one supports embryonic stem cell research is not the issue the issue is whether the government should spend time and taxpayer dollars on destroying human embryos when more promising and proven non-controversial research on adult stem cells is succeeding. It is a sad commentary on the 110th Congress that this is one of the few bills to have made it to the Presidents desk, and Im pleased the President vetoed the measure.

Im pleased that the President moved today to focus federal research on stem cells that have pluripotent or embryonic-like qualities. This approach is bolstered by new research showing the full potential of stem cell research can be realized without harming or destroying living human embryos.

Boehner represents Ohios 8th District, which includes all of Darke, Miami and Preble counties, most of Butler and Mercer counties, and the northeastern corner of Montgomery County. He was first elected to Congress in 1990.
