On NBC’s Today Show, Speaker Boehner Discusses Need to Address Debt Crisis
Posted by Press Office on February 13, 2013

During a Today Show interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) discussed the need to address our debt crisis that is threatening the future of our kids and grandkids, the mandate from the American people to find common ground, the ongoing bipartisan conversations on immigration reform, and the culture of violence in our society:

ON THE PRESIDENT’S REFUSAL TO TAKE ON HIS OWN PARTY TO CUT SPENDING:

“What I suggested was during the debt talks, the president didn't have the courage take on the members of his own party.  The president knows that we’ve got a serious spending problem and we’ve got a debt problem, a structural debt problem that needs to be resolved.  But there were issues that we had agreed upon in the summer of 2011 that once we got through December of 2012, weren't even on the table anymore.”

ON THE MANDATE FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO FIND COMMON GROUND:

“The president and I get along fine.  We have a very good relationship.  We come from very different worlds.  He has a liberal ideology, I come from a more conservative side.  But having said that, the American people on election day gave us a mandate, a Republican congress and a Democrat president.  And the mandate was to find a way to work together, find common ground.”

ON THE PROSPECTS FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM:

“That’s why I’ve had-- four or five Republican members sitting with four or five Democrat members now for four years, working through a lot of issues on immigration.  And I think what I’ve been trying to do is to foster this bipartisan conversation on immigration reform, both legal and illegal immigration.  And I would hope that the Senate players could continue to work in a bipartisan fashion.  That's the only way we’re gonna be able to address the big issues that face our country.”

ON THE CULTURE OF VIOLENCE IN OUR SOCIETY:

“All of our hearts go out to the victims of these tragedies around our country.  I would hope that we would take a broader look at this.  The violence in our society, where does it come from?  If you look at each of these mass shootings -- each of the shooters -- all had mental health issues.  how can we do a better job there of controlling their access to weapons?  What do we do about school safety?  There are a lot of things that we ought to look at.  Listen, there are a lot of ideas that are out there.  And the question is, what will truly help bring down the violence in our society?”

    I know what you are going thru, and it is diffucult to surrender. You are loved and know that Just one day at a time try to fight your disease to make your way back into recovery. Maybe that's already started by the time you've read this, which would be wonderful, but if not then today can be the day. Your disease will try to tell you to be ashamed and question how can you go back to admit defeat. Coming back, however, is strongly and loudly admitting your desire to be sober. And that admission and pronouncement is not being defeated, but instead is absolutely being a success. All I have to do is just not drink today. Please let me and others in recovery help you do the same thing, Jackie. You are very much in my heart, thoughts and prayers;

    I make my living in an entrepreneurial manner, life coaching in Los Angeles. The President is using these issues to draw a deeper delineation between his party and the Republicans. I don't think either side can really back their positions without referring to canned talking points, and the effort to sustain 1.2 trillion dollar annual deficit spending on the Democratic side of the aisle is pure pish posh. We need to address our budget and economy before any other matters at this point, we are about to fall into the category of a has been nation.

    Well done. I am so glad you got a chance to speak reasonably to NBC viewers, as often I think the Campaigner in Chief is the only one they hear. Republicans are so vilified I think people forget we aren't monsters. How can you get the message out more often more effectively?

    Speaker Boehner, please pull everything out of the hat to force your fellow Republicans in the House to STAND YOUR GROUND. Obama only wants tax increases, has no care about how this sequester will harm the nation. Once you Republicans stand your ground, get out of DC and go to your constituents and tell the the truth about Obama's devious plan. We need to use whatever dirty tricks we can to fight this.

    Try to actually work for the common good of ALL the people of these United States. That includes not gutting Social Security and Medicare. Just raise the salary limits and reform. We do NOT want it privatized!

    Dont cut me off again -you said the president wont'take on his own party to make cuts to spending. NOT SO - You just dont listen-- He wants to make responsible cuts that do as little harm to this country as possible. It seems like you don't have the guts to stand up to the party members of your party to compromise and give revenue to the american people (I say that because the president is our representative. We voted him in. Your paycheck is paid by the people Of the U.S. Not by just district 8 of ohio. I KNOW THAT OBAMA IS NOT GOING TO ALLOW YOUR TEA PARTY PEOPLE to HURT MIDDLE AND LOWER CLASS PEOPLE THAT YOUR PARTY WANTS TO DO. HE REALLY CARES ABOUT THE MAJORITY> HES NOT CAMPAIGNING LIKE YOU ARE> BOTTOM LINE- YOU WILL STAND FIRM FOR THE UPPER 2% AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL NOT BUDGE KNOWING THE HARM AND HURT YOU ARE CAUSING THE REST OF THE COUNTRY> YOU NEED TO REMEMBER (THERE IS A GOD}
