#SpendingIsTheProblem: Chasing Higher Spending With Higher Taxes Won’t Solve Our Debt
Posted by Press Office on December 13, 2012

In the debate over avoiding the “fiscal cliff,” an important point has been forgotten: when it comes to solving our debt, government spending is the problem that must be addressed.

Republicans have offered a balanced, pro-growth solution that would avert the fiscal cliff by making needed spending cuts and reforming our tax code in ways the president previously supported. This kind of plan – backed by a majority of the American people in survey after survey – would help address our debt and pave the way for long-term job growth.

President Obama and Democrats, on the other hand, want to punish small businesses with higher tax rates while increasing spending. The president has demanded as much as four times in tax hikes versus spending cuts, which are dwarfed by new ‘stimulus.’ This isn’t balanced. And it won’t do any good.

The chart above – prepared by Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and the House Budget Committee – shows what happens to projected levels of tax revenue (green) if President Obama’s tax increases kick in (blue), and compares that with recent and projected spending trajectory (red). As you can see, if the president gets his tax hikes, we still face a mountain of spending-driven debt.

Even Democrats like Erskine Bowles admit, “We have to cut spending.” As said on CBS Face the Nation, “Even if you raise the top rates back to the Clinton rates, that only creates about $400 billion over 10 years. That's $40 billion a year. We have a trillion dollar a year deficit.”

Spending is the problem. Republicans want to make needed spending cuts; Democrats are silent. And that’s why there’s still no agreement on averting the fiscal cliff.

Keep the pressure on Obama. Smaller government is the answer and we need statesmen like you to continue fighting the cause. Good work.
  • Ron Hope commented on 12/13/2012
I am a life long Republican, and very much believe we need a smaller government with dramatic cuts in spending. While I admire the fight against increasing anyone's taxes, in this case I believe we're doing ourselves as conservatives, a huge disservice in fighting this very unpopular battle against raising taxes on 'the rich'. No matter what we say, it is presented as yet another fight for the wealthy. All my life I've believed it was unfair that republicans have always been portrayed as being for the wealthy, and now it's easy to see why. It will not help the economy, but I don't think it will hurt it either. Change the terms so it doesn't hurt as many small business owners, and let them have what they want. Let the democrats finally own this economy, with no way to blame it on anyone else.
  • Harry Anderson commented on 12/13/2012
Dear Mr. Boehner, I encourage you to stand your ground and not give in to the tax increases on the wealthy. As I understand it, the amount of tax raised each year is enough to run the government 17 hours. This is an ego trip for President Obama. Good Luck! Harry Anderson
  • Thomas Costello commented on 12/13/2012
I don't see why going back to tax rates from the Clinton years is being treated as such a big deal by the Republicans in the House. With a stance of no changes to tax rates for upper middle when you have such a large problem, how can I take House Republicans seriously?
  • David Brenner commented on 12/13/2012
I'm an independent voter from the midwest and have been watching the current politics over the fiscal cliff. Coming to a agreement on this issue is very important to my family and I. I don't believe the Republicans have made a convincing case when it comes to negative impacts of raising taxes on the higher earners. A balance between cuts and investments in America is a must. Get this done.
  • Lloyd Ankrom commented on 12/13/2012
This is what you need to present over and over and over again. That no matter how much you tax the "rich" it won't even get close to closing the gap with our current spending levels. Educate the public on this simple idea over and over and over again!

Congressmen, don't put over two million long term unemployed behind your political adgena. We need the unemployment extension to survive. Trust me i wish i could find a job but until i do these benefits save my family. People before politics congressman

Run an add, explain it to the public who voted Obama in a 3rd grade language that SPENDING is the problem and IRRESPONSIBILITY. Youtube has a lot of videos about system abuse. People with ten Obama phones! People having several kids living in welfare for years and not working.... Run an ad and see what the taxpayer will say. Right now, Obama is campaigning against GOP. It seems like for the next two years he is working of getting all if not majority out of the office. Majority belives the lies...

Mr. Boehner.... Please give Obama a no strings attached tax increase on the rich. I'm only saying this because it will force Obama to reject it and expose his true colors (which is him wanting to go over the cliff). Keep up the good work!

Dear Senator Boehner, I just read that you are working with President Obama to avoid the fiscal cliff. I just wanted to thank you! Sincerely, Anne Sutter

Your blog on "Spending is the Problem" exactly address the key issue of mounting debt. I wish the media were publishing this chart so that every American saw it. In my opinion it may be better to go over the "fiscal cliff" than to fail to address the debt that so many responsible leaders have identified as the most severe threat to America's security. I urge you to hang tough on making serious reductions in current and future spending.

John is doing a good job and I don't wish I were in his shoes . Is he really asking to cut medicare and social security spending? There has to be other non esential places to cut like feign aid, arts, government employees who do as little as posible to keep their job. I am guessing this is the media destorting his coments

I agree, we waste enough money to run a small foreign country, i worked for state government and city government and they both waste money as there is no limits. Every facet needs to be looked at in every budget and do away with the wasteful stuff.
  • James Marshall commented on 12/17/2012
A point was made recently on NPR about congressman and senators. More than likely they are in the higher income bracket. Also, they don't seem to have any requirements to post their income. One wonders if this is a conflict of interest? Perhaps this is why they are so reluctant to raise taxes (actually back to what they had been doing very well with years ago).
  • Roger Blalock commented on 12/17/2012
While I agree that big government has to be made somewhat leaner, my opinion is that cuts in SS are not the way to do it. Seniors live on fixed incomes while all expenses continuously go up. The budget and its numerous bloated special requests from congressmen has gotten out of control. Consider cutbacks in monies that we give to other countries that, as Sen McCain would say, don't like us very much. Consider stopping the bridges to nowhere, the complete waste of money to special projects just to get a congressman re-elected. I have been a Conservative and have voted republican since I have been able to vote, and I am 65 this year. My country is forgetting about its seniors while trying to protect millionaires. I personally don't believe that the millionaire tax problem is worth fighting for. People with money have great tax lawyers, and will find ways around any increase anyway. Remember the people that made this country what it is today, it seems that we are being forgotten. There are MANY budget items that could be trimmed and even cancelled, just put Ryan on the case. Thanks for the time you or one or your staff take to read this..
  • David Volmerding commented on 12/18/2012
Please stand firm on spending cuts. Our future generations do not deserve to be saddled with this kind of debt. We need to adjust our spending now. Raising taxes just to spend more is wrong. I would accept a tax increase only if it went to cutting the deficit.
  • George Montgomery commented on 12/18/2012
We Republicans and Independants here in California look to your leadership against the "insane spending track" the current Democratic government is on. Increasing the tax rates on people with an adjusted gross income of $250,000 or more is not a solution and will simply hurt high income persons (including many many small business) and thus the economy. Less business spending and fewer jobs etc. The REAL solutioin is to bite the bullet and seriously cut spending INCLUDING the farcical "foreign aid" we provide to countries that do NOT support our republic. My request is that you NOT bend to the Obama regime and stand true to your pledge. More revenue through increasing the tax base BUT only with a 3 to 1 spending cut or better. We are relying on you and your constituents in the House. Regards. George
  • Mary Ann Brotman commented on 12/18/2012
Do not cave into Obama............Let him go off the cliff if he will not cut spending. You must stay focused on this issue. Whatever the case, NO MORE SPENDING. Have a plan to reduce the DEBT by so much every year for the next 4 years. I am very disappointed in seeing that you are willing to compromise your principles. Also, allow the Dept. of Education's union pay for security at our schools around the country. Put an armed guard, retired policeman or retired military on schools everywhere in this country. This is a disgrace. Also, CLOSE THE BORDERS. I do not feel safe anywhere in America. Our cities are all corrupt and dangerous. The President and anyone representing the government all have the protection of security so why is it ok to have armed personnel protecting you and yet when it comes to the ordinary hard working American taxpayer have their right to bear arms taken away. I do not think so. The ACLU has taken God out of our schools, the Ten Commandments in our courts, wants to legalize drugs, and take away free speech. What is wrong with that picture? Please, do not cave into Obama's game. This administration is all about POWER.

Hello, timee are getting very scarry on unemployment right now. Unlikie the phased and incremental impacts on Medicare and Social Security, a cut in unemployment benefits will have instant and catastrophic impact. Millions of people will face homelessness in very short order. The complete loss of income will also become employment prohibative as we eill no longer pe able to pay for the tools needed to find work. Internet service, phone service, and a roof over ones head are all "musts" to secure a job. The labor market is still too flat for us to live without these extensions. Please, for Gods Sake, agree to unemployment extensions regardless of the "fiscal cliff" issues. The time for us all to wait will end before budget negotiations can possibly conclude. Thank you.

December 18, 2012 Dear Mr. Speaker, John A. Boener, Please take a few moments, approximately 10 minutes, to read my letter. I know that your time is valuable and precious; but please take a peak into the life of one struggling family. I also know that time is money, but not all of us have an opportunity to make that statement manifest in our lives... yet. I am a single mother who was born with brain injury, a heart malformation, and some sort of seizure disorder in 1963. I struggled trying to be normal, because my mother could not take me to a doctor, he knew she couldn't afford his fees and worried, so sometimes he saw me for free; and unfortunately many diagnoses were not yet discovered. My dad hid and his family helped, so he would not have to pay the $10.00 per week child support that he was ordered to pay for the three of us. Yes, that was the amount for all three children, not each of us. My mother never knew about financial programs to help, nor disability, so she worked 3 jobs, through the stigma of working women and took care of her Mom as well. I had married, tried to work, been fired for my seizure disorder, worked again etc. I had 2 sons back to back with my husband, a tree surgeon (fancy title). He was able to choose not to be responsible; after all, he didn't have a son growing in his belly. I worked and got fired for seizure disorder again and again and going to school, caring for my sons. Their dad chose to move and hide from his child support obligation of $150.00 per month. His Mother helped him hide. When the IRS came to me to pay his taxes, I simply explained that he never filed because he contracted out his services, and why I was not responsible. They never contacted me again and eventually it led to 2 child support payments, one for $50.00 and one for $8.51. Again, I tried college... seizures... Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate which I was very good at, even with the seizure disorder, but alas, my heart malformation got in the way. However, I could and would save your life or the life of anyone else if need be. My favourite subject was Disaster Management. My youngest son, Joseph, had a near drowning accident at age 6 1/2. This resulted in coma, permanent brain damage, visual impairment, and he will forever be 6 years old. He's 28 now. Very happy, loves people, makes people smile everywhere he goes. My eldest son, Sean, who was 8 at the time of Joe's accident, grew up knowing he would be the one to care for Joe if I died. He even saved my life at age 9, with precordial thumps! We've lived through a house fire, and having our home burglarized and vandalized while we were at the hospital. We are not only survivors, we are family! In 2007, I had a 10 hour procedure on my heart (without anesthesia,) at Mayo Clinic. The doctor did the surgery pro-Bono, and Angel Flights got me there and back. They were all amazing people, with a hearts of Gold. Four months later, Sean, a Criminal Justice student, was hit by a drunk driver and sent 17 feet straight up into the air. He was an infield intubation... He was in a coma, he has permanent brain damage, no teeth, and is in need of a hip replacement. Eventually, the drunk driver, got a $250.00 ticket because he could afford an Attorney and we only had Victim's Advocates. Sean lives with his girlfriend, Sarah, who works for an elderly lady and keeps her out of a nursing home. Sean and Sarah have loved one another since they were 18 years old. Now, Sarah has recently been diagnosed with a birth defect, Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), which causes all of her vitals to suddenly stop, requiring Cardiocerebral Resuscitation (CCR) or hands only CPR as it is usually a sudden, witnessed arrest. Sean got Sarah insurance through the allowance of preexisting conditions. His student loans he had at the time of his accident, I thought were forgiven; but in my shock of his accident and coma, I was wrong, they were only deferred and have gone into default; with the addition of $8,000.00 interest, so all together he owes a little over $10,000.00. He still has hope of finishing his payments so he can go back to school. He took the practice exam for the State Bar, and scored 94% !! He hopes to someday be able to care for me and his brother. He is also hoping that he and Sarah can leave Durango, CO and move here to Fruita, CO to help me take care of his Grandmother, my Mom, Mary. In 2010 my Step-Dad, a Veteran, died and my Mother came to live with Joseph and I. On Veterans Day, 11/11/11 Joseph won $11,000.00 in a contest (how fitting, my Step-Dad was still trying to take care of us,) and we got a HUD home and fixed it enough to make it warm and live in. We owe $110,000.00 on it now, and it gets lower each month! Now I will close... Joseph and I are giving back to the community. I am on our City Counsel Arts and Culture Board, and Joe will get to help when, and as much as he can. My Mother cheers up people and seniors, everywhere she goes. She is 78 and has White Matter Disease, but is strong and independent for now. Sean is determined to make it on his $845.00 per month (minus the $84.50 they are deducting for his student loans, and Sarah's $185.00 insurance premiums,) so she can get her $55,000.00 life saving surgery. After which, she hopes to go to college, and study Social Work and Psychology. Sean and Sarah are also very talented musicians and long to become youth ministers. They love to help troubled youth, as they will never be able to have children on their own because Sarah's AVM has taken over all of her female organs. She like Sean, is only 29. My point is this... I am not asking for a hand out, or even a hand up. I am hoping to encourage you to see that people actually raise families on $7.00 per hour incomes; and some of us, not by our own design or choice, are living on Social Security Disability and Joe is on SSI. Sean has a pair of dentures I bought him, but the tops split up the middle and he keeps gluing them with super glue. Joe has to snowboard in Special Olympics without glasses to try to correct his 20/400 vision, as his glasses requirements are too expensive, $200 - $300.00! I am determined to never let my Mother go into a nursing home, nor to ever let Joseph go into a group home, and Sean and Sarah are determined to the same commitments. Please sir, if you make any more cuts, we will all become homeless. We have no close family, other than one another, and I am doing all I can to make sure everyone stays strong and hopeful; because over time, we can all still be productive members of society and assets to any community with which we choose to become involved! We are choosing Fruita, CO, so Joe can hopefully cross the small streets and become more independent. Sir, thank you for reading any portion of my letter. So sorry that I can't afford to print, nor mail this letter to you. If I appear ill mannerd, I am truly sorry. I pray that you are blessed by God for each alphabet here that has graced your eyes. Will you let them grace your heart as well? With my sincerest appreciation of the work that you do, and my utmost respect, thank you for your time. Democrats are the party of high taxes. Repubilicans are the party of low taxes and economic growth. It's as simple as that. If I supported raising taxes on anyone I would have voted Democratic. Agree to raise taxes and the Republican party loses my vote.
  • Zack Trussman commented on 12/20/2012
If you talk with the average person and asked him if he would pay more taxes if he were making $400,000 per year; the answer would be of course not a problem. Do the deal. You'll get enough Republicans to get it through the house. Maybe you'll lose your job maybe not. It would be a victory for our side actually. Think about the big picture and how we can get a leadership role some day. Plan "B" isn't the way. I don't even personally know anyone who makes 1 million a year.
  • Anne Warrington commented on 12/21/2012
Please stop clouding the issue. Vote to increase taxes on $250,000 incomes and leave medicare and social security alone. Are you so isolated in your ivory tower that you didn't get the message in November from the middle and working class? You will completely destroy the Republican Party if you continue be blind to the people. Tax increases are one thing, cutting the deficit is another.
  • Anthony Bolin commented on 12/21/2012
If you want spending cuts to go along with the tax hikes then why are you fighting tooth and nail against the defense spending cuts? I understand we need a strong military to remain safe in this world but we've raised military spending so much in the last 10 years to accommodate for our 2 wars we were fighting, but the last time I read those wars are either over or will be over within the next 2 years as our president has promised. The people of this nation rely on things like social security and unemployment to live. It's easy to say we just need to "bite the bullet" when you make $200,000+ a year, us real citizens, who are stuck raising families on minimum wage jobs because all of america's industries ran off to Asia, have been biting the bullet since the 1980's! The tax hikes are going to have to happen, it's what america wants, obamacare is going to have to happen, it's what america wants, and yes spending cuts will have to happen soon too, but cutting from the social welfare at a time like this is simply not the answer. Furthermore, what happened to Clinton's pay as you go system? Call me crazy but didn't his system obtain us our first surplus in decades, if not a century? If you want to fix the spending problem you should look to reinstating pay as you go, that will calm the Democrats mass spending.

When I came back to work my employer cut me from full time to only 12 to 20 hrs a week.I lost my medical benefits because I no longer qualified for health care through my employer because I no longer was consider full time. Then less then a year after that the company let me go. Three years shy of my full pension. I could not qualify for any government help! My meds avrg. 250. a month. I was hospitalized and received a bill for 80.000.00 bucks. I lost my wife, my house, and was told I need a liver transplant within 5 years or I'll die. Now I lived paycheck to paycheck for 30 years.
